The Story of the Lopburi Ling – Our Logo

When Sawaeng and Somporn Saengkham founded their pioneering business, they wanted to pay tribute to their hometown of Lopburi. This historical town in central Thailand is famously home to a large population of crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Lopburi is one of the oldest cities in Thailand, with a history spanning over 1,000 years. It was once an important center of the Khmer Empire, and many ancient temples and ruins from that era still stand today. These historical sites, particularly the Prang Sam Yod temple, have become the primary habitat for the monkeys. The Prang Sam Yod temple, with its iconic three spires, is a central location for the macaque population. These intelligent and adaptable animals have made these structures their home, using the ruins as a playground and a place of shelter.

Over the years, the monkeys have become accustomed to living alongside humans. They are known for their bold and curious nature, often interacting with locals and tourists. The monkeys can be seen climbing buildings, walking along streets, and even entering shops in search of food. Their antics, while sometimes mischievous, are generally tolerated and even enjoyed by the townspeople.

One of the most famous events in Lopburi is the annual Monkey Buffet Festival. This unique festival, held every November, is organised by the local community to honour the monkeys. During the festival, large tables are set up near the temples and filled with fruits, vegetables, and various treats for the monkeys to feast on. The event attracts tourists from around the world and is a major highlight for both the monkeys and the town’s residents. The festival is not only a spectacle but also a way to give back to the monkeys, who are seen as both a blessing and a challenge for the town.

So, how did the Lopburi monkey make it into the LPS logo? For us, the ongoing relationship between the town’s residents and the monkey population is a testament to the adaptability and coexistence of humans, animals, and nature. This spirit is at the heart of how LPS farms the land. We see ourselves as partners with the land, not its owners or exploiters. Our logo reflects this harmony and respect for the natural world, embodying our commitment to sustainable and ethical practices.

In the mid-1970s, Sawaeng and Somporn Saengkham, hailing from Lopburi, embarked on a journey to Phrao, seeking new horizons. The couple started modestly with a small workshop servicing tractors, leveraging their keen understanding of the machinery and the needs of local farmers. Over time, their consistent hard work and savings enabled them to purchase a piece of land, thus turning their dream of farming into reality. As the years rolled on and they delved deeper into the intricacies of agriculture, they recognised a potential improvement in yields and a reduction in risks by adapting crops. Their extensive farming experience had instilled in them a belief that modifying crops to align with the prevailing climate could usher in better returns and greater sustainability.

Today, Lopburi Power Seed stands as a testament to agricultural excellence in Thailand, emerging as one of the country's premier providers of corn for animal feed. But their agricultural prowess doesn't stop there; they've diversified their farming ventures, delving into the cultivation of several other crops like mangos, bananas, and bamboo, reflecting their adaptability and passion for innovation. Furthermore, with the landmark decision to legalise cannabis in Thailand, Lopburi Power Seed swiftly pivoted to meet the changing landscape. They have committed themselves wholeheartedly to the research and development of cannabis strains, ensuring they are perfectly optimised for Thailand's unique climate. This adaptability and forward-thinking approach cement their position as leaders in the Thai agricultural sector.
